Buenos Aires.- When Carlos Moy talks about Rafael Nadal, the pride is noted on his face and his words are full of compliments. "I dont have doubts he has a great future by the way, " the Majorcan tennis player says about his friend and countryman.
In interview with the agency DPA in Buenos Aires, where he defends the title of the ATP tournament of that city, Moy admitted that when he saw Nadal by television getting with the fifth point and to assure the victory of Spain against Czech Republic, at Davis Cup, he felt "very proud and very happy".
"Nadal is a great friend and I know him for ages", affirmed the ex-number one of the world, a mentor of the young Nadal, of 17 years, that exploded came onto the ATP circuit last year.
About the question of if he believes that Nadal will get as far as he did, Moy responds: "It is too soon to tell, but I dont have doubts that he is having a great career and has a great future by the way. He has things to improve, but doesnt have limits. He hasnt learned all that he has to learn still, which is good".
Moy, of 27 years and currently in the seventh position in the ATP ranking, habitually coaches with Nadal when both are in Mallorca. The two have faced two times in the circuit, with a victory for each one in 2003. This year "Rafa" was finalist in Auckland, and already is situated in the Top 40 of the ranking, while Moy is returning from a wound in his heel that caused him to take time off after winning Chennai and reaching the finals in Sydney.
The wound also took Moya out of the first round of Davis Cup in Brno, a series in which Spain couldnt play with its two better players, because the "Mosquito," Juan Carlos Ferrero, was also injured.
"It was a hard blow, all know what signifies for me and how motivated I was about playing Davis Cup. I have a lot to thank 'Rafa' and Feliciano (Lpez) for, because that victory gives us the opportunity to do my dream, that is to win the Davis Cup", affirms Moy, who remains with the desire to win the Davis Cup after Spain lifted the Salad Bowl in 2000. That time, he was not called for the final with Australia, as he was suffering with a wound.
Now Moy looks forward to the the quarterfinals series against Holland, to be disputed in Spain, on April 9-11. "If Im not injured, if nothing abnormal happens I believe that I have option to be there, I am excited."
In his debut in Buenos Aires, Tuesday against the Israeli Harel Levy, the pain in the toe didnt bother too much, but for Moy the Davis Cup is another thing. "They have said me that I have to become accustomed to play with pain, and that is what I am going to do. But if Davis Cup was today, I wouldnt play. If I still feel pain I would not do".
And thus it explains it: "That would be too risky. The fact to have so many players behind me, so good, and to go in injured would not be good. Being 100% already we are even, so if you have a little pain, it would be a lack of respect".
When asked if the action against Czech Republic gives Nadal the right to play in singles against Holland, Moy exposes his opinion in these terms: "If Nadal wins Indian Wells and Miami, the logical thing is that he has to play. But that, that of select, is a task for the captains. More logical would be Ferrero and me in the singles, but in a month or month and a half all can change. In Brno, the role of Nadal in theory was to be for the double, that is what they said to us."
Going further, Moy says to be calm on Spain's changes in the Davis Cup. What happened the other day shows that there is a very good team, although we arent the two first in the ranking, we can win, even if we are on the "outside."
Moy is excited about his return to Buenos Aires, and about an eventual final of Davis Cup before the local team. "It wouldnt be bad to return in December. In reality, it would be a great final, a dream for me".
