PALMA.- In honour of Carnaval, the election campaign continues to parade dressed up as a pre-campaign. One of the main candidates decided to put on her tracksuit yerterday, and to follow the leaders wake in a padel match. The Partido Popular candidate for Congress, Mara Salom, with Rafael Nadal, the new star of Spanish tennis as her partner, offered an open challenge to a paddle match. The match was not only to celebrate Palma being chosen as the home of the next Davis Cup play-offs, but also to do some sport before a get-together Slaughter-Day meal.

This challenge by Nadal and Salom, was picked up by the mayor of Manacor, Antoni Pastor, and number five on the list for Congress, Salvador Llull. However, the mayor of Manacor only played a few minutes and Nadals uncle, also called Rafael, played with Salvador Llull. Perhaps in the interest of evening the sides, Pastor decided to concentrate on the organization of the meal. Salom is very a very keen padel player and Rafael Nadal is a marvellous tennis player, so a talent on the court like Rafaels uncle was needed to balance the match.

The celebration started yesterday midday in the Sacoma Tennis Clubs paddle courts in Sant Lloren des Cardessar. After sweating a lot, all of them went to the Manacor race track, where the local Partido Popular had organized a slaughter-day meal, possibly to warm up for the official election campaign.

Minimum income

The main rival in this race before the 14th May election, the PSOE (Socialist Party), created the ZP ( Zapatero for president), driven by the candidate Francesc Antich which made an appearance at Santa Mara Sunday Market. The ex-president of the Balearic Government and other socialist candidates for Baleares handed out pamphlets, explaining the national PSOE program and specific points relevant to Baleares Islands.

Progressites per les Illes Balears stated that 11,5% of the population of the Balears Islands is living below the poverty line and suggested a minimun incometo facilitate the social integration of poor families.

The Left-Wing coalition warn that only a small part of the population can be considered wealthy and promises a reform in the IRPF law to tax the highest incomes and to penalize the financial profits from speculation.
