Eighteen-year-old Spanish phenom Rafael Nadal just won his first ATP singles title (in Sopot), but he already has an award-winning website, created by Susan Seemiller, a California lawyer, and a crew of dedicated fans. Not only that, there is even a Spanish-language version.
The English version was launched in June 2003, when Nadal was making his move from challengers to the main tour. The website has grown steadily, and when Nadal defeated World No. 1 Roger Federer at Key Biscayne in April, over 2000 visitors logged on to learn about Nadal.
Earlier this year, the website was named Player Site of the Month by German Tennis and Court Central magazines. German Tennis stated, "He might not yet be a top player but the website of Spanish super talent Rafael Nadal belongs to the best players' homepages in the professional circuit: always up to date and with lots of news about `Rafa.'"
Spanish-speaking fans wanted a Spanish site, and the founders considered various options. Ultimately, they formed a partnership with an energetic bilingual fan in Australia, and they planned to launch the site near the U.S. Open. It was in place when Nadal won his first singles title, and they seized the moment and launched it that day.
Now his Spanish- and English-speaking fans can follow his progress on a single site. Vamos, Rafael (Go, Rafael!). The Spanish and English versions may be accessed at http://www.vamosrafael.com.
