France's Julien Benneteau, ranked 75th in the world at the Entry system, played his best tennis to overpower and upset Spain teen sensation Rafael Nadal 6-3 6-0 at the ATP event in Lyon, France. Benneteau was born in a small city close from Lyon.
Rafael Nadal was playing his first tournament since his Davis Cup success against Arnaud Clement of France and played above his level on a surface which doesn't suite him well, the Indoor carpets are very fast and a shotmaker like Benneteau could serve without any problem on this fast serve court.
The 18-year old held his first three serves before being broken in the seventh game with Benneteau's forehand return winners.
From there on Benneteau raised his level of play serving close to perfection and returning Nadal's weak first serve percentage with great accuracy.
Nadal would never recover from this break loss and would allow Benneteau to claim the next 9 games of the match.
Benneteau will next have the opportunity to measure the efficiency of his serve as he faces Swedish ace man Joachim Johansson.
